We have FIFO Heavy Duty Mechanic opportunities available and we know that understanding a role goes far beyond reading the job description. That’s why we asked one of our Heavy Duty Mechanics, Timothy “Tim” Robertson, to share his honest experience working FIFO.
Here's what Tim had to say:
Q: What drew you to FIFO work initially, and what keeps you coming back?
“For years, I was constantly chasing jobs, traveling long distances and even relocating just to secure my next position. Even when I found good employers or better pay, I was still working long days with little quality time off. When I did get a weekend, I was completely exhausted and just going through the motions. Life revolved entirely around work.
FIFO changed everything. It gave me genuine quality time off and allowed my family to experience a father and husband who wasn't always burnt out or short-tempered. What keeps me coming back is simple: remote work sites actually give me far more meaningful time at home than traditional schedules ever did.”
Q: What's the hardest part of FIFO life that people don't always talk about?
“The challenges vary from person to person, but I'd say adjusting to new surroundings and camp living is initially tough for first-timers. However, this adjustment period is usually short-lived.What starts as unfamiliar territory soon becomes your home away from home, and you develop routines that work for you.”
Q: If someone is considering FIFO for the first time, what would you tell them to expect?
“Expect a complete lifestyle transformation. The time on-site may feel long initially, but so does your time off. Your personal life takes on an entirely new perspective - instead of working all year for a few weeks of vacation, you get substantial time off every few weeks. I can honestly say I've never met anyone who wanted to return to their old Monday-to-Friday grind once they experienced the FIFO lifestyle.”
Q: Looking back, is there anything you wish you'd known when starting out?
“Expect potentially long flight times and parking fees if you're driving to the airport. Flight delays and cancellations are inevitable, especially during winter months due to weather. You'll also need to get comfortable with shuttle services if you have layovers - it's all part of the routine once you adjust.”
